Project Description

Given the rapid introduction of new technology in digital design, the project was created by Marcy L. Koontz and Ian E. Gibson to quickly address the technological aspect of integrated curriculum development in the apparel/interior design and merchandising disciplines in a computer-based virtual learning environment. The project addresses the current pressing need for the training of apparel, textile and merchandising students skilled in the computer-aided design arts within an up-to-date and creatively integrated digital environment. Several contemporary and near-future instructional and research challenges will be addressed, relating the application of advanced technology to a traditionally, somewhat slowly-changing field. Instructors, students, and current employees in this industry suddenly now have a lot of new skills and knowledge to acquire. The ADMCLA project illustrates a nexus of several complementary interests and points of view: Teaching, Research, Design, Manufacturing, Marketing: Retailing and e-Commerce. The results of these activities will be realized as an instructional retail undertaking - "Harris Department Store" depicting a space matching the real-world dimensions of the college's building, Doster Hall, on the University of Alabama Campus. The creation of a model three-dimensional store environment as a virtual world - exported to, and visible on, the Internet - provides a excellent opportunity to further the education of students in the creation of an active virtual community and model commercial portal. The virtual department store can be developed as an educational model of a context provider of the disparate affiliated communities of the College of Human Environmental Sciences.
