Project Description

The PROPOLIS Project is a part of the European Union's FifthFramework Programme (FP5) for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration activities for the period 1998-2002. PROPOLIS comes under the key action "The City of Tomorrow". The objective of PROPOLIS is to research, develop and test integrated land use and transport policies, tools and comprehensive assessment methodologies in order to define sustainable long-term urban strategies and to demonstrate their effects in seven European cities. Here at CASA we are working on a model of Inverness and the surrounding area. We have information relating to building use, populations, traffic counts and land use among other things, and the aim is to use this to predict future growths, declines and changes in different zones around Inverness based upon different levels of planning constraints. Part of this uses 2 dimensional map based visualisations and part of this will involve an interactive 3D interface. We are expermenting with placing part of the project into an ActiveWorlds interface, creating live dynamic output from our Geographic Information Systems. From here it will be possible to look at different policy options for Inverness and to reach general recommendations for optimum combinations of different policy types. The strategies will aim to improve urban sustainability in general and to reduce urban pollution and congestion.
