Project Description Virtual College Eight will serve as an incubator for content and techniques (especially bots) to be incorporated into Virtual UCSC. College Eight at UCSC has an environmental emphasis, as will VC8, and will thus be interdisciplinary. VC8 will have a strong outreach component, selecting websites and educational software programs that will allow students more hands-on and real-world learning opportunities than the traditional classroom, and will complement the Virtual High School currently in the AWEDU. VC8 will also give public school students the ability to "visit" our campus and interact with university students and staff, and receive tutoring in various subjects, as well as the opportunity to assist us in building VC8. Initially we'll be working with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination, a highly successful national program which prepares students who traditionally have not had access to higher education) classes at two local high schools, but through AVID and other campus outreach initiatives we expect to expand fairly quickly. | ||

Project Description The Virtual High School is an educational demonstration model built for the University of California, Santa Cruz's Virtual High School Feasibility Study led by Vice Chancellor Francisco Hernandez. Through a volunteer collaboration between Penny and Craig Twining of Active Art Design and Bonnie DeVarco, this realistic virtual environment features an office with office hours for real time communication and guidance, a Spanish Language Class with links and teleports to Spanish speaking worlds, a Chemistry Lab with an interactive Student WebQuest Wing, and a Geometry/Art Gallery with animations and artworks linked to more than 40 sites on the World Wide Web. Through the UC College Prep Initiative, the further development of the VHS will offer a compelling and content rich collaborative environment for synchronous learning sessions complete with interactive bots, full course modules and more. | ||
