Project Description

Designing networking communities (known also as "virtual", "online" or "cyber" communities) is a compelling and challenging task, not only for eclectic academies and contemporary entrepreneurs but for people with the widest variety of interests, backgrounds and motives for banding together. What really makes a community? How are community relationships built, nurtured and supported? What are the factors that influence the "life" and "activities" of networking communities? Is a community successful? How different cultures interact in a networking community? This subject focuses on this phenomenon and its application in different areas of human activities. It describes different types and models of networked communities, the underlying information technologies, which support different aspect of on-line communities, the design of such communities and how one can conduct research in networking communities. The subject covers methods for "designing" virtual communities. It considers factors that influence the growth and success of networking communities, collaboration within the community and shared representations that support such collaboration. The subject is thought as part of the MSc in Computing program at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia by Simeon J. Simoff.
